It depends on your state. Some boards use one fixed date for everyone, such as Utah's January 31 or Indiana's October 31. Others tie expiration to your birthday or birth month, including Maryland, Iowa, Massachusetts, Maine and South Dakota. Your exact date is printed on your license and shown free on Nursys QuickConfirm.

Find yours in 30 seconds

  1. Look up your license on Nursys QuickConfirm (free) or your board's license lookup.
  2. Note the expiration date and status on the record.
  3. Find your state below for its renewal rule and window.
  4. Set a reminder: free Nursys e-Notify (60 days ahead by default) or NurseCETracker renewal reminders (opt-in).

How do I check when my nursing license expires?

Search your name or license number on Nursys QuickConfirm, which is free, or use your state board's license lookup. The record shows your expiration date and status. Nursys e-Notify, also free for nurses, can email you a reminder before each expiration: 60 days ahead by default, or 180, 90 or 30 days.

Birthday and birth-month states: your license expires on your birthday or in your birth month, so it can fall in any month: Maryland (28th of your birth month), Iowa (15th of your birth month), Massachusetts, Maine, South Dakota and Minnesota (period set from your birth month and year).

Do multistate (compact) licenses expire on a different schedule?

No. A multistate license follows your home state's renewal schedule and CE rules, so it renews when your home-state license does. When you move your primary residence to another compact state, you apply for a license there, and that state's schedule applies from then on. The compact covers RN and LPN licenses, not APRN licenses.

What if I miss my renewal date?

Grace periods and late rules differ by state. Iowa allows a 30-day grace period after the 15th of your birth month, and its board rules don't prohibit practice during it, though employers may. Minnesota has no such window: a license not renewed by midnight on the expiration date needs reregistration. Check your own board before you work.
